Buses
Electric Buses will eventually replace the Diesel buses currently used. This will reduce fuel and servicing overheads for Bus Companies.
With sufficient Government subsidy (as done in almost every other developed country except the UK) we could then enjoy bus services that are cheaper, reliable and run into the evenings and on Sundays.
They should also serve more nearby villages, removing the need for many to be forced to drive into Sudbury, freeing up parking spaces in town and of course reducing emissions from these vehicles.
Our bus services need major improvement.
- Bus fares need to be less than the cost of driving the same distance, especially with two or more people travelling together.
- Bus services need to start early in the morning and finish in the late evening. Currently while some services start early enough, they finish far too early, there are no bus services beyond 7pm to or from Sudbury. This means noone would use the bus to visit Sudbury or the surrounding villages in the evenings as there would be no way back at the minimum and probably no suitable bus service there
- Bus services need to run on Sundays, currently they do not.
- Bus services need to be reliable, customers need to be certain the bus will arrive on time at bus stops. This is currently not the case as bus services are cancelled regularly.
- Bus services need to serve where people live and where they go. There are massive gaps with many villages with no service at all and some routes non-existent. For example getting from Long Melford to Sudbury Health Centre is possible on only two or three buses a week. There are no bus services from Sudbury to Haverhill, a major employment centre and ideal route to get to Cambridge by public transport.
- Bus services need to be regular. ideally half-hourly or better, on some more rarely used routes, hourly.
There are no plans at all currently to fund changes to bus services for Sudbury. You need to persuade your local County Councillor these changes are sorely needed.
